This NPS calculator for government employees is built for Central and State Government staff covered by NPS. It takes your basic pay and current DA (63% from 1 July 2026), adds the 10% employee and 14% Government contributions on Basic + DA, and grows them with your pay to show the corpus, tax-free lumpsum and pension at retirement.

How NPS works for government employees
- Who is covered: Central Government employees joining on or after 1 January 2004 (except armed forces), and employees of states that adopted NPS.
- Contributions: 10% of Basic + DA from you, 14% from the Central Government. Many states also pay 14%; a few still pay 10%.
- Investment: by default, split among SBI, LIC and UTI pension funds. You may choose Scheme G (100% G-secs), LC25 or LC50 instead.
- At retirement: at least 40% of the corpus buys an annuity; up to 60% is a tax-free lumpsum.
- Tax: the Government’s 14% is deductible under 80CCD(2) in both regimes.
NPS or UPS?
Central Government NPS employees could opt for the Unified Pension Scheme, which pays an assured 50% of average basic pay for 25 years of service. The choice involves a trade-off: UPS gives a guaranteed, inflation-linked pension; NPS usually gives a much bigger lumpsum and leaves a corpus. Put your numbers into the UPS vs NPS calculator before deciding anything, and read the UPS guide.

Effect of the DA hike on your NPS
Because contribution is on Basic + DA, every DA hike raises your PRAN credit. The 3% hike to 63% from July 2026 adds 0.3% of basic from you and 0.42% from the Government each month. On a basic of Rs. 45,000 that is Rs. 135 more from you and Rs. 189 more from the Government every month. See the DA calculator.
