UPS vs NPS Calculator

The UPS vs NPS calculator puts both schemes side by side on your own pay, service and assumptions: monthly income at retirement, lumpsum, family pension, total income over retirement and what is left for your family. No scheme wins for everyone, so the honest answer depends on your numbers.

Example: age 35, basic Rs. 50,000, 30 years of service at 60

Basic grows 5% a year, DA/DR assumed 30% at retirement, NPS return 9%, annuity 6.5%, 25 years in retirement with DR rising 4% a year:

UPSNPS
Monthly income at 60Rs. 1,04,816Rs. 73,415
Lumpsum at 60Rs. 12.58 lakhRs. 2.03 crore
Family pensionRs. 62,889Up to Rs. 73,415 with a joint-life annuity (joint rates are a little lower)
Total income in 25 yearsRs. 5.24 croreRs. 2.20 crore
Inflation-linkedYesNo (fixed annuity)
Capital left for heirsNone (pool stays with Govt)Annuity price returned: about Rs. 1.36 crore

At a 9% return UPS clearly gives more lifelong income, while NPS gives a lumpsum about Rs. 1.9 crore larger plus the annuity capital back to the family. At 11% NPS return, the NPS pension rises to about Rs. 99,090 and the NPS lumpsum to about Rs. 2.74 crore, which narrows the monthly gap a lot.

Who UPS suits, who NPS suits

UPS tends to suit

  • Those who want guaranteed, inflation-indexed income
  • Long service (close to 25 years or more)
  • Low appetite for market risk
  • Strong reliance on family pension for a spouse

NPS tends to suit

  • Young joiners with 30+ years to invest
  • Those who want a large lumpsum at 60
  • Those who want wealth to pass on
  • Short service (below 10 years gets no UPS payout)
Before you switch

A UPS member can switch back to NPS only once, up to one year before superannuation (three months before VRS). The switch cannot be reversed. Speak to your DDO and read the latest DoPPW instructions first.

What the calculator assumes

  • NPS: 10% employee + 14% Government on Basic + DA; 60% lumpsum, 40% annuity with return of purchase price.
  • UPS: 10% + 10% to your individual corpus, 8.5% to the pool; no corpus withdrawal; payout from 50% of last-year basic, proportionate below 25 years.
  • DR on the UPS payout rises by the rate you set each year; the NPS annuity stays flat.

Change any input to test your case. Then check details in the UPS calculator and the Govt NPS calculator.

Frequently asked questions

Which is better, UPS or NPS?

UPS gives more guaranteed lifelong income for most long-service employees at moderate return assumptions. NPS gives far more lumpsum and leaves capital for the family, and can match UPS income if returns are high. Use the calculator with your own numbers.

Does UPS give lumpsum like NPS?

UPS gives a smaller lumpsum: one-tenth of monthly emoluments for each completed six months of service. Taking more from the individual corpus reduces your payout proportionately.

Can I go back from NPS to UPS later?

The option to choose UPS had to be exercised within the window the Government set (extended to 30 November 2025 for existing employees). New entrants get a choice when they join. Check current DoPPW instructions for any reopening.

Is the UPS family pension better than NPS?

UPS pays 60% of the payout to the spouse with DR. Under NPS, a joint-life annuity can continue the full pension to the spouse, and with return of purchase price the capital also goes to the nominee.
