UPS Calculator for Government Employees

The UPS calculator is for Central Government employees under the Unified Pension Scheme, in force from 1 April 2025. It projects your basic pay to retirement and shows the assured payout, Dearness Relief, the lumpsum at superannuation, the family pension, and how withdrawing from your individual corpus reduces the payout.

UPS pension formula

Assured payout = 50% x average basic pay of last 12 months (25+ years service)
              = 50% x avg basic x (service in years / 25) (10 to 25 years)
Minimum       = Rs. 10,000 a month                              (10+ years service)
Plus Dearness Relief on the payout, revised like DA
Lumpsum at superannuation = 1/10 x (monthly basic + DA) x completed six-month periods of service
Family pension = 60% of the payout admissible just before death

UPS payout examples (25+ years of service)

Average basic, last 12 monthsAssured payoutWith DR at 30%Family pension (60%)
Rs. 60,000Rs. 30,000Rs. 39,000Rs. 23,400
Rs. 1,00,000Rs. 50,000Rs. 65,000Rs. 39,000
Rs. 1,50,000Rs. 75,000Rs. 97,500Rs. 58,500
Rs. 2,00,000Rs. 1,00,000Rs. 1,30,000Rs. 78,000

Lumpsum example: with basic + DA of Rs. 1,30,000 at retirement and 30 years of service (60 completed six-month periods), the lumpsum is Rs. 1,30,000 / 10 x 60 = Rs. 7.8 lakh. This lumpsum does not reduce your payout.

Contributions under UPS

10%Employee, of Basic + DA, to individual corpus
10%Government, to your individual corpus
8.5%Government, to the pool corpus (not yours)
18.5%Total Government contribution

At superannuation you may withdraw up to 60% of your individual corpus, but the assured payout is then reduced in the same proportion. Most employees who want maximum lifelong income leave the corpus untouched.

Key UPS rules

  • Voluntary retirement after 25 years: payout starts from the date you would have superannuated.
  • Dismissal or removal from service, or resignation: no assured payout.
  • A one-time switch from UPS back to NPS is allowed, up to one year before superannuation or three months before voluntary retirement. You cannot come back to UPS after switching.
  • Contribution during suspension is optional; during probation it is mandatory (DoPPW OM, 27 October 2026). Read our report.
  • UPS pensioners must submit a life certificate every year by 30 November; the new UPS Jeewan Setu app allows Aadhaar face authentication. Details.

Frequently asked questions

How much pension will I get in UPS?

One-tenth of monthly emoluments (basic + DA) at superannuation for every completed six months of qualifying service, in addition to gratuity.

Can I switch from UPS to NPS?

Yes, once. The switch must be made at least one year before superannuation, or three months before voluntary retirement.

Is UPS applicable to state government employees?

UPS was notified for Central Government employees. States may adopt it for their own staff; some, such as Maharashtra and Manipur, have announced or approved versions of it.
