The National Pension System (NPS) is India’s government-backed, market-linked retirement savings scheme, regulated by the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA). You contribute during your working life, professional pension funds invest the money, and at retirement you take part of the corpus as a lumpsum and use the rest to buy a lifelong pension.

How NPS works, step by step
- Open an account through a Point of Presence (a bank, post office or eNPS online) and get a 12-digit Permanent Retirement Account Number (PRAN).
- Choose how to invest: Active Choice (you set the E/C/G mix) or Auto Choice (life-cycle funds that reduce equity as you age), and a pension fund.
- Contribute monthly, yearly or whenever you like. Government and corporate employees contribute through payroll.
- Your money is invested by the pension fund and held by a custodian; NPS Trust oversees it; a Central Recordkeeping Agency (Protean, KFintech or CAMS) keeps your records.
- At exit, withdraw the permitted lumpsum and buy an annuity from an insurer, which pays your pension for life.
